Emerald Cup Announces Rage Lounge at Harvest Ball 2021

Regenerative agriculture exhibit space doubles as a learning, socializing, and networking hub for farmers of all sizes interested in earth-friendly techniques. 

The Emerald Cup Awards enthusiastically maintains its commitment to sustainable agricultural practices with the 5th Annual Regenerative Agriculture Garden Exhibit (RAGE) Lounge, hosted in partnership with Regenerative Cannabis Farming, at The Harvest Ball, December 11 to 12, 2021, at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, Calif. The RAGE Lounge is an educational, interactive living exhibit space highlighting farming practices that reverse climate change and build soil diversity, yielding grape and cannabis harvests acclaimed internationally for their superior terroir and terpene profiles. With a farmer’s market-like atmosphere, the RAGE Lounge offers consumers an opportunity to meet and mingle directly with the region’s top cannabis growers, attend classes highlighting regenerative growing techniques, and learn, share and connect with farms of all types of size and crops. 

“We have a responsibility to our community, to our planet, and to the cannabis plant itself,” says ECA founder Tim Blake. “The RAGE Lounge represents the very best that we can offer in terms of honoring the earth and creating a network of growers and land stewards. As a result of this commitment, in 2016, The Emerald Cup established the Regenerative Cannabis Farm Award (RCFA) to honor those farms that set the bar for cultivating in a manner that promotes the highest level of ecological health and healing. The following year, the RAGE Lounge was established to bring a living focus to outdoor, sun-grown, and organic farming techniques that serve in sharp contrast to industrial and corporate cannabis operations and has quickly become a destination event within The Emerald Cup.

The area itself is transformed into a relaxing oasis of living plants, water features, and interactive exhibits, with plenty of room to grab a seat (or hay bale) and strike up a conversation.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: The Story of Our Himalayan Hemp Seeds

Delve into Hemp Foundation’s humble beginnings and learn our environmental and humanitarian goals of cultivating hemp. It is more than just a crop. Once upon a time in a land far, far away…  Okay, not that.  This is the tale of…  No, not that either.  It all started like so. Three friends found an unlikely charm in the crests and troughs of the Uttarakhand mountains. Those friends were Jaspreet Singh, Vivek Singh, and Vishal Vivek (a.k.a. me).  We frequented obscure villages in Uttarakhand more and more. During one such visit, we noticed something odd. There weren’t any men around.  On further investigation, we learned that most men in Uttarakhand’s villages had migrated to cities looking for a job. With no alternate financial source, the women had to wait and see if the men would return with a means for food.  This was a heartbreaking reality check for us. And we were obstinate to fix things.   One pitfall of Uttarakhand’s terrain is how uncultivable it is. Well, uncultivable for most crops.  Hemp is one of the few crops that can survive without rich and nutritious soil. It can also survive in colder climates. But there was still a hitch. It wasn’t legal to grow hemp in Uttarakhand till 2017. We began our efforts soon after the legalization.  Raising Awareness About The Wonder Crop  Hemp is an age-old crop that many have forgotten about. So an enormous challenge for us, once hemp was declared legal, was to convince farmers to grow it.  There are many negative opinions about hemp farming. And without willing farmers, the hemp economy could not succeed. So debunking all these myths was the first order of business.  We spoke to countless farmers in Uttarakhand. We educated them about the merits of hemp, both environmental and financial.  Hemp Foundation worked hard to reassure farmers that hemp was indeed legalized in the country. Following this, we taught farmers how they can apply for licenses and fill out the paperwork.  But merely explaining facts without giving them resources is not productive. Appropriate training was necessary. So we empowered farmers with training for sourcing, growing, and selling industrial hemp.  An important criterion for growing hemp was keeping the Tetrahydrocannabinol concentration below 0.3%. This was one of the key teaching points. We taught farmers how to identify viable seeds and how to process the different parts of the hemp plant.  It was rewarding to see that what we had to say was being received well by the farmers. More and more people started cultivating hemp.  Getting Work Done, Without Men A principal priority for us was to employ women as key players in the cultivation process. As I had mentioned before, the men had already migrated. So it was a no-brainer to work with the women remaining in the villages.  The Hemp Foundation conducts workshops to train and empower women. They are taught how they could profit from hemp and vice-versa. We teach village women hemp-agro and marketing skills. Creating a financial opportunity for women is likely to increase their standing on the social ladder. And that’s exactly what happened.  Poverty levels decreased in families with working women.  Hemp Foundation heavily encourages women-centered self-help groups. We connect groups to income-generating activities to keep the women driven. Our fabric weavers are predominantly women.  Bringing Back Those Who Left We thought it was unacceptable for people having to resort to leaving their homes. We needed to reverse migration patterns and re-habitat the eery ghost villages in Uttarakhand.  Hemp was the obvious solution. Hemp can grow in infertile land. This was in abundance in Uttarakhand. Further, hemp can also rejuvenate the soil and replenish biodiversity.  With the increasing popularity of hemp farming, economic opportunity grew. This instigated many farmers to migrate back to their homeland and revive the abandoned villages. This Is How Hemp Is Beneficial To The Environment The benefits of reverse migration are manifold. The hundreds of thousands of hectares of abandoned land were once again put to use.  Without cultivation, the soil became infertile and was prone to erosion. One danger of unhealthy soil in mountain regions is the risk of mudslides. Reviving hemp diminished this risk.  Hemp is also an incredibly giving crop. By cultivating, it returns biodiversity to the land. You may ask, “won’t any crop do that?” Possibly, but none does it as well as hemp.  Hemp does not need chemical fertilizers and pesticides to grow. It is a natural pesticide. The crop does not need a ridiculous amount of water to grow. And, as a bonus, it can be grown twice a year.  Hemp is also an excellent crop to be used in rotation farming. It naturally kills weeds, giving way for other crops to grow bountifully. Every part of the hemp crop is put to use. The seeds produce oil, which is a popular ingredient in cosmetics and food. You can also make milk from the seeds which is an excellent alternative for vegan milk.  They process the stalk to make tons of derivatives of hemp products including fiber, paper, industrial concrete, and rope. Extracts of the leaves and roots are used for medicinal purposes. So, practically nothing goes to waste.  Perhaps the most interesting fact about hemp is that is it carbon-negative. It takes more carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere than is input for cultivating it. Large-scale cultivation of hemp could solve the climate change crisis.  With all this in mind, we were keen to get the hemp economy started in India. We knew the benefits, and the world deserves to know it as well. Here began our efforts to promote hemp as an environmentally sustainable alternative. CBD and its Advancements in Cellular Health

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a major component of Cannabis Sativa that has biological cellular advancements on human healthy cells. It exercises a vast range of anti-inflammatory properties to regulate the cell cycle and the functions of immune cells. These effects include cell viability, production, movement, apoptosis (a method of cell death to remove unneeded/abnormal cells), and inflammation.

Compassionate Holiday Giveaway; Together We Can Save Lives

Sweetleaf’s 25th Anniversary

The Sweetleaf Collective began helping low-income veterans, terminally ill, and POC patients after the passage of Proposition 215 in 1996. They are currently celebrating 25 years of compassion with a holiday campaign to help patients and veterans access 300 pounds of free medical cannabis. They are a nonprofit that organizes compassion patients so they can access free medical marijuana, also referred to as compassionate cannabis. Funds raised go to organizing patients and not to the purchase of cannabis.

Dennis Peron, the founder of the California Medical Cannabis Movement and Industry, one of the authors of proposition 215, and also one of the original compassion activists, once said, “Thanks to Sweetleaf Collective for caring for so many patients who have no other access to this medicine.”

In 2021, Sweetleaf and their partner project, Team Compassion, have helped California patients access over $2 million worth of free medical cannabis. Over 1000 veterans and patients all across the state have benefited from this program.

300 Pound Holiday Compassion Drive

One of Sweetleaf’s main partners, Team Compassion, recently received a 300-pound flower donation from Soma Rosa and Elk Horn farms. This donation is currently at Highway 1 Distribution and is waiting to get to patients across California. The December goal is to distribute this donation out through Sweetleaf’s Compassion Network. Sweetleaf‘s largest hurdle for this campaign is funding. Until funds are raised, this donation will be waiting in Santa Cruz to be distributed.

Sweetleaf relies on funding raised through their compassion lighter and rolling paper sales. For every $3 Compassion smoking accessory sold, a veteran or patient is able to access 3.5 gr. of free medical cannabis.

To reach their goal of 300 pounds of holiday compassion, Sweetleaf needs to sell 40,000 lighters and rolling papers through participating cannabis retailers. They are looking to onboard new dispensaries and delivery services to help those most in need this holiday season. If 80 retailers purchase 500 lighters and rolling papers each, Sweetleaf will meet its goal. With the help of Highway 1 Distribution and Team Compassion, over 1000 patients will have the best holiday of their lives.

The Patients And Why Sweetleaf Does What They Do

Sweetleaf’s focus has always been to create more access to cannabis for those most in need. After seeing the dramatic impact this medicine has had on patients, Sweetleaf Joe has always wanted to help more. He describes his life’s mission as “easing human suffering.”

Veterans suffering from PTSD have the highest rate of suicide in our country. Medical cannabis helps them to relieve their anxiety and depression and saves lives. Many people don’t understand that for a lot of our veterans, PTSD is a terminal illness.

Cancer and HIV/AIDS patients report dramatic results when they have sufficient amounts of medical cannabis. Compassionate cannabis can sometimes reduce their daily pharmaceutical intake by an incredible 80%. This medicine saves their lives.

People of color have large amounts of undiagnosed PTSD in their communities from over-policing and systemic racism. Equity and compassion are two sides of the same coin. They both uplift and help underserved communities. Free medical cannabis helps these communities to heal, relieve anxiety, and improve their quality of life.

Science Has Confirmed: Hemp Is The Future

Read the highlights, and learn how you can put hemp to use.   During the last few years, the need to protect our environment has become a major concern on a global scale. Our planet is dying. Yet, we continue to exploit the few resources we have left.   The aggravating need to protect our future has led researchers to study natural, eco-friendly resources like hemp. Hemp is a low input, high-yield crop which has the potential to save our future. Each part of the plant has some commercial use. Compared to its widely cultivated alternatives, it is sustainable and can be cultivated on infertile lands.  So, what role can you play to facilitate this shift to hemp? As a consumer, I encourage you to look for hemp-based alternatives to your usual everyday products. This creates a market that the producers will want to sell to. However, producers and consumers need reliable information to produce/purchase the best possible commodity.   If you want to gain insight into what the leading researchers and institutions are saying about the properties of hemp and how you can use it, read on. To tap into a market, like hemp, you must rely on credible research.  I have outlined some useful insights from research papers that can prove beneficial to you.  Use woven hemp fiber for composite reinforcement to provide strength Did you know that plant fibers are used in composite material components? What if I tell you that the potential of these plant fibers can be enhanced by using hemp fibers? This applies to the composites that use aligned fibers. This paper has used two different batches of woven hemp fabric with similar quality and physical properties. And concludes that both woven hemp fabrics are suitable for composite reinforcement. If we use hemp fibers for composite materials, we can enhance the fiber alignment and reinforcement handling during the composite fabrication. The fabrics were saturated with ammonia for 2 seconds and dried on steam cans, during which residual ammonia was removed by hot water. Hence, if you use a fabric like hemp, it will not wrinkle easily in wet conditions and maintain its appearance. You can also use the ammonia treatment to reduce washing shrinkage.  Liquid ammonia treatment increases the cantilever bending stiffness of hemp, ramie, and linen fabrics. However, the resin treatment decreases it. You can determine the fiber rigidity by the bending modulus.  You can use ammonia to increase the moisture regain of hemp. It also makes the fabric more breathable. If you use the resin treatment for cross-link finishing, the tear strength of the hemp fabric increases.  Read the paper here: URL http://www.fibtex.lodz.pl/pliki/Fibtex_(y6pcln72o9nba9l6).pdf Use hemp fabrics for composites instead of flax cross-ply laminate Till today, the field of bio-based composite materials mainly focuses on the use of unidirectional reinforcements.  Unidirectional reinforcements use fibers that run in one direction only.  Use of woven fabrics like hemp is still complex because of the finite length of plant fibers and the high number of process parameters that can be tuned.  However, by not using hemp fabrics, we are missing out.  This paper outlines how the weave pattern and process parameters influence material properties at different scales. The use of X-ray nano-tomography shows us that hemp fabric can achieve better results than its alternatives, especially the front-runner flax cross-ply laminate. Woven hemp fabric can give us tensile properties in bio-based composite materials. We just need to use the hemp fabric made from low-twisted rovings.  Lower twist rovings also provide better draft performance due to less fiber-to-fiber friction.  Read the paper here: URL https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1359836819347262 Use hemp fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester composites for use related to room temperature water In this experiment, they subjected hemp fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester composites to water immersion tests. This enabled the study of the effects of water absorption on the mechanical properties of this composite. This happens due to increased voids and cellulose content. We find that when hemp fiber comes into contact with boiling water, water uptake behavior is radically altered. This is because the moisture causes degradation of the fibers.  However, if the fabric is exposed to moisture there is a significant drop in tensile and flexural properties. Hence, if we want to use the composite material for situations that come into contact with boiling, instead of using hemp fiber, we should use an artificial source.  If our use for the composite is related to no or room temperature water, we can use hemp. However, today they have been replaced by chemical dyes. This study examines the use of natural dye obtained from Sambucus Ebulus L. plant for dyeing hemp fabric. The study uses 100% natural hemp fabric. This fabric is dyed with 15 different concentrations of 3 different mordant substances, one of which was natural. You may already know that synthetic dyes cause immense harm. However, metal salts cause much more damage to your health and the environment.  This environmental harm has piqued the interest of consumers and researchers to look into alternative natural dyes.  As per the results of the experiment, we see that the best dyeing features were obtained using Quercus Aegilops natural mordant in 15% concentration.  You can obtain a natural dye and natural fabric by this method. 100% hemp can be dyed with […]
