How bright is the future for cannabinoid drinks?

They might tick the box of the wellness trend but cannabinoid drinks are a complex proposition, reports CBD-Intel

Consumers’ desire for health and wellness continues to drive purchases and food and drink formulations that create innovative solutions for “mental and emotional wellbeing” have become one of Mintel’s top three global food and drink trends for 2021.

Cannabinoid beverages tick the “wellbeing” box and the industry appears to be investing in their potential, given the number of mergers, acquisitions and new product launches that involved beverages and cannabis firms last year. For example, Tilray recently spent $5m on the acquisition of two Californian craft beer brands, Alpine and Green Flash.

Some market analysts predict a bright future for the niche market. A report from Grand View Research, for example, estimates that the global cannabis beverages market size will reach $2.8bn by 2025, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.8% during the forecast period.

The report said: “The rising popularity of wellness drinks is also expected to support the demand over the forecast period. The legalisation of cannabis for medical and recreational purposes has had a strong impact on the sales of alcoholic drinks. As a result, many alcohol manufacturers are investing in the growing trend of marijuana-infused drinks.”

But CBD-Intel’s market analysts believe that Grand View’s valuation is inflated, and the matter is confused by the inclusion of THC drinks, which do not necessarily fit into the same niche as CBD beverages.

CBD beverages alone are likely to only grow from around $55m in 2021 to $365m in 2025, CBD-Intel predicts. Even a large jump to $518m in 2026 would leave them well short of Grand View Research’s combined prediction and it is unclear whether the addition of THC beverages would be able to account for the differentiation.

“Beverages such as CBD-infused sparkling waters may produce a trend, but without any psychoactive effects I don’t see these being a daily use product unless the price is reduced to the same as a normal sparkling water,” said CBD-Intel’s head market analyst Nate Erskine. “Users seeing real benefits from CBD will continue to use CBD, but I see them administering CBD in other formats as opposed to consuming it.”

Erskine believes that CBD is at a crossroads – a point at which it needs to find its place as a medicine and/or a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) wellness or a recreational product.

“THC is totally different,” he says. “Especially when it comes to a potential alcoholic beverage displacer.”

And it is that difference that makes it hard to talk about cannabinoid beverages as a combined category. THC and CBD beverages would likely be aimed at different groups, marketed in different ways to target different needs and would face multiple different hurdles including complex regulation, dosage issues, taste formulation challenges and product degradation if the storage and packaging is inappropriate.

For example, CBD beverages have typically been marketed as relaxation beverages to replace a glass of wine at the end of the day, whereas THC beverages have thus far typically been marketed as “social” drinks to be shared with friends.

As CBD gets to its crossroads, it could be that the recreational opportunities presented by THC beverages grow to be far more lucrative than those presented by ones with CBD – if legislation permits.

However, the greatest opportunity for cannabinoid beverages may lie completely beyond THC or CBD and, instead, involve rarer minor cannabinoids. Some are already on the market, such as Colorado beverage firm Keef brands’s, line of low-calorie and low-sugar Life H2O drinks formulated with THCV, CBG and CBN.

The firm said the new beverages, which were launched in July 2021, marked “the beginning of a new chapter that goes beyond using the traditional THC active ingredient”.

And what difference will this “new chapter” make to any valuation of the cannabinoid beverage market?

Letters to Rev General Cannabis Growing

Welcome to today’s article regarding general cannabis growing stuffs. A water related Q, a temperature and humidity Q, and a breeding Q. I hope you find this informative, glad you decided to stop by.

Alright then earthlings, let’s rock and/or roll with today’s “Letters” to Rev…

General Cannabis Growing Question #1: Watering Routine?

FROM: Molly, La Jolla, CA

“Hi Rev! Hey, could you do me a big favor please? Just run down in simple steps how you manage your plant water. I am having some problems running steady PPM and pH. Thank you!”

Rev’s Answer to Q1
This is My Eternal Tea Bubbler I Call the Churn and I Care Not About pH or PPM Here
This is My Eternal Tea Bubbler I Call the Churn and I Care Not About pH or PPM Here

Sure, Molly I’m happy to help. I have partied hundreds of times around La Jolla Shores and the Cove. Step ONE is ‘The Churn’ as seen in the above photo. Think of this as a “perpetual living tea” that needs to bubble for at least 24 hours before using, but I normally run mine for a whole grow or longer. Your PPM runs high in this container—but you don’t have to care how high the PPM is, or even about the pH, because this isn’t the water you use on your plants, not at this concentrated level at any rate.

With The Churn, it is important you are consistent with your additions. For example, to my 1-gallon Churn I add 2 oz. of fish tank water and 2 oz. of worm farm leachate, 1/8th teaspoon of dolomite lime, and about 3 or 4 granules of Epsom Salts. If you don’t have a fish tank or a worm farm, no worries, use some alfalfa meal, and some dried fish meal, and a little bat/bird guano along with the dolomite lime and Epsom Salts. There are millions of good combos here, just use the same additions at the same ratios in The Churn for the entire grow. The microbial life in symbiosis with the plant will adapt.

I Add the Churn Water to the 5-Gallon Bucket of Groundwater Until it Reaches 60-65 PPM
I Add the Churn Water to the 5-Gallon Bucket of Groundwater Until it Reaches 60-65 PPM
The Process

The dolomite lime auto-buffers your pH towards 7.0 pH, and my Churn normally runs about 7.5 pH. I combine my dechlorinated groundwater (50 PPM in a 5-gallon bubbling bucket) with a little Churn water until my 5-gallon bucket water hits 60 to 65 PPM. I let that bubble for about an hour and then use it. Normally my end result plant water runs at 7.2ish pH and 60-64 PPM. The 5-gallon bucket is also on perpetual cycle, and I always leave just a bit in the bottom before refilling.

General Cannabis Growing Question #2: Hot and Humid Woes?

FROM: J. S., Coquille, OR

“I hope you can guide me here Rev. I used your advice heating my indoor garden slightly at night to combat high humidity in the cold wintertime. It worked just like you said, thank you. Where I live it is particularly humid all the time and very rarely is it low. In the summer months I run super-hot, and still humidity gets too high, especially some nights, while the temps are also very hot, and I can’t use heaters at night without getting big stretching and uber high temps. Even a dehumidifier causes too much additional heat in the garden on many summer nights. What’s my move here Rev? Gratitude.”

Rev’s Answer to Q2

Howdy, I get your boggle here fully. For reference here, 10 flowering plants about 3’ tall, can add 20%+ humidity to a 20’x20’ room no problem. That is a big factor of course here adding to your already high humidity. I noticed you never mentioned venting to me. Making sure you are sucking out enough of that garden humid laden air is critical, you may want to upgrade your air exchange. Your regular air movement inside the garden matters more than you may think here as well. I would make sure there are enough fans to keep the garden air moving around well at all times.

A portable A/C unit can work well here also. The downsides are they use a lot of wattage and amps. Just make sure and never aim the cool air anywhere near directly at any plants. When I have used this option in the past, I always aim the cool air output aiming up at the ceiling. A/C units also dehumidify.

Selection Skills Matter Huge When It Comes to Epic Recombinations
Selection Skills Matter Huge When It Comes to Epic Recombinations

General Cannabis Growing Question #3: Early Selection Secrets?

FROM: Bug, Jacumba Valley, CA

“I read an article by you a long time ago where you shared one of your breeding selection secrets regarding leaf hairs. That was so spot on man, I was just wondering if you might want to drop another random gem on me? I am struggling with my selection skills, and due to space restrictions the earlier I can thin the herd the better. Thank you so much for what you do and Happy New Year!”

Rev’s Answer to Q3

Happy New Year back at ya Bug. Ummm, a secret huh? Heh heh, okay, how about I give you a tip that is not common wisdom, yeah? Alright, one of the very important things to notice during the plant’s early growth (2 to 3 weeks old) is the water usage compared to the others. You can observe this fairly easily by simply measuring your water input, and see who runs out of water first and, how much faster.

I have never seen a truly epic selection that wasn’t also a severe water consumer. So, that’s a biggie for males or females. Beware of environmental influences as variables affecting your results. Things like plants closer to vents or fans, heat sources etc., can dry out faster due to those factors. The more data you can collect observing your plants, the better you can collate that information as it relates to better selections. Many cannabis expressions are variety/strain dependent, while others, like the water tip, relate to selection using all varieties of cannabis—the whole cannabis genome if you will.

General Cannabis Growing Knowledge O-Plenty from the Past
General Cannabis Growing Knowledge O-Plenty from the Past
Afterword

A bit more detail regarding my “perpetual” 1-gallon Churn, and my 5-gallon plant water containers. What I do is use them either about halfway down, and just refill with dechlorinated groundwater, or I at least leave about 1/5th of the solution (the Churn and the 5-gallon) leftover and just build the new ones from there. This keeps my Microlife in those containers living and evolving/adapting to do even better jobs. Always keep a gallon of distilled water handy in case you run your PPM a little too high. Distilled water takes down PPM levels FAST!

I am almost done with the largest chapter in the new book, whew! Everything else is a cake walk compared LoL. Trying for the end of February to finish the manuscript. Grab a copy of my latest published book, True Living Organics 2nd Edition by The Rev and bone up on your all-natural growing skills. If you are looking for some healthy, hearty, kickass cannabis beans drop by Kingdom Organic Seeds and have a look around. Here’s another cool article by yours truly if you would like to peruse it: More Great Cannabis Growing Tools – Skunk Magazine.

I hope you liked today’s general cannabis growing questions and answers. I’m outty for now but I’ll be back next Tuesday with another article here at SKUNK! L8r G8rs…

Goldenseed x Sackville & Co. Pre-Rolls Have Landed!

During pre-pandemic times I was invited to speak at the Berlin Bar Convent in Germany on the topic of cannabis and beverages. One of the places I had to visit was the Berlin Wall. Why? History is much too important to ignore. But what does this have to do with Sackville? Significantly, because I brought stickers from their web store with me. “The Moon is High and So Am I” sticker now graces the Berlin Wall. I could have left one of their bougie weed grinders by the wall, but that wouldn’t have lasted more than a few hours. The Sackville sticker could potentially be seen by many. So, I leave you with this thought, should you see the Sackville sticker on the Berlin Wall, please take a picture of it and send it to me. Cheers! WB

Photo Credit: Warren Bobrow at the Berlin Wall

Sackville is a luxury cannabis brand designed by women who LOVE to smoke weed!

Warren Bobrow: What was the impetus behind your partnership with Goldenseed? How did you meet?

Sackville: We are obsessive about quality – in everything we do. Goldenseed had the highest quality cannabis we had ever consumed, and that started a conversation about how we could create something really special together. That initial conversation was over two years ago (in a whole different-pre-pandemic world); it’s taken a long time, but good things usually do!

Warren Bobrow: What was your process of working with them on these two pre-rolls?

Sackville: We started preseason talking through the elements we wanted to introduce our audience to through our own pre-rolls. It was very important to us that our pre-rolls had their own personality, the same way our brand does, so we worked with the master growers at Goldenseed to explore strains and terpene profiles to create what we felt embodied who we are with two truly unique flavor profiles and experiences.

Warren Bobrow: Please tell me about “From NY With Love” – why is this campaign significant, why now?

Sackville: We are a New York-based brand, and we truly believe NY has such an incredible cannabis culture that doesn’t get talked about as much as the west coast. We wanted to bring our NY energy and vision to the CA market.

Warren Bobrow: Where do you see cannabis legalization headed in NY?

Sackville: In-roads are being made, we expect to see actual recreational retail stores start to open their doors around 2023, and New York will not step into the space quietly. We expect to see incredible experiential retail and in-person experiential events that really tell the cultural story of cannabis (obviously, we will have to see how regulations play out to know how wild this will go), but we expect New York to bring art, music, and culture to the cannabis industry in a way that hasn’t been seen yet.

Warren Bobrow: What’s next for Sackville in the cannabis world?

Sackville: Global domination

?
But truly, we see Sackville growing our reach across the US as cannabis legalizes and continuing to gain a reputation around the world (were currently sold in 31 states and seven countries and growing fast!) We would love to get more into consumption products in other states, but as we all know, that takes time, and we really are obsessive about quality, so we need to ensure anything we put our name on is something we truly love and want to share with the world. In the short term, we are excited to launch a new Design Series this month! We have worked with several incredible artists in different modalities from fashion design, painting, graphic design, and illustration to create limited-edition collections, their take on our brand. They were given free rein to use their voice and talents to express themselves, a creative incubator of sorts. We will be highlighting these incredible artists throughout the year, so stay tuned!

Sackville & Co., a design-focused, contemporary cannabis accessories brand from NYC created by women who love weed, has teamed up with Santa Cruz legacy growers Goldenseed on their first THC offering!

Sackville worked closely with Goldenseed to develop two terpene-infused, full flower pre-rolls: Beach Daze and Night Haze, featuring the high-quality cannabis you expect from Goldenseed with the stylish flair of Sackville & Co., infused with Goldenseed’s own cannabis flower terpenes.

Of the collab, Goldenseed’s Marketing Director Aaron Martinez said: “We are so stoked to finally be working with Sackville & Co., a collaboration that has been long in the making and stifled by the pandemic. We have always admired Sackville’s empowering female energy, unapologetically East Coast vibes, design-forward aesthetics, and vision for their brand. This collaboration is the melding of two cultures, from the coasts of California where we grow our cannabis to the raw grit of NYC – we are connected by passion, art, style, and commitment to crafting high-quality cannabis products.”

Beach Daze and Night Haze pre-rolls are available for purchase in dispensaries throughout California at $40/5-pack.

What Is The Best Type Of Cannabis Legalization Model?

Cannabis prohibition is one of the most harmful public policies in modern human history. It’s a policy that has harmed countless lives directly and indirectly, and that harm lasts long after any initial charges or prosecutions occur. Thankfully, cannabis legalization is spreading across the globe, particularly in Europe.

At the end of last year, Europe witnessed its first country, Malta, passing an adult-use cannabis legalization measure. Multiple European countries are expected to legalize cannabis soon, possibly as early as this year. Those countries include Luxembourg, Germany, and Italy. The Netherlands and Switzerland are also pursuing legalization via pilot programs. Countries in other parts of the world, such as Thailand, Israel, South Africa, and Mexico, are also expected to pass and implement legalization measures soon.

Every country that has legalized nationwide so far did so using a legalization model that differs from the rest. Going forward, as more countries legalize cannabis for adult use, which model will they copy? Or will they each go in an entirely new direction?

Current Legalization Models

As it stands right now, only three countries have legalized cannabis for adult use on a national level – Uruguay, Canada, and Malta. Canada has the most comprehensive legalization model in that it includes storefronts, delivery services, and other ways for any person of legal age to acquire cannabis. Uruguay historically limited pharmacy and club sales to residents only, although that is changing. When Malta implements its model, it will only involve clubs as a means for people to acquire cannabis outside of cultivating it themselves or getting it gifted to them.

Malta’s model, and to a lesser extent Uruguay’s model, is not new. Cannabis is still prohibited nationwide in Spain; however, the ‘club model’ is already thriving in many parts of the country, particularly Barcelona, where we will be holding the world’s largest cannabis superconference in March. This legalization model involves private clubs where people sign up for a membership to access cannabis sales through the club.

The club model differs from the long-established (yet also technically illegal) coffee shop model in Amsterdam, where no membership fee is required. The club model is likely to be a much more popular model for many countries compared to the Amsterdam model. Whether Spain ultimately gets the credit for helping pave the way or not, it certainly deserves that credit.

Will Spain Ever Officially Legalize Its Cannabis Clubs?

Spain’s cannabis club model is popular with international lawmakers because it lowers the barrier to entry into the cannabis industry and ensures local access to products. It’s a model that doesn’t involve as much bureaucratic structure and regulations. Compared to Canada’s legalization model, it’s a fast and straightforward way to implement a legalized industry.

With Malta pursuing a club-based legalization model and similar clubs already existing in Uruguay, more countries will likely include club provisions in their own legalization models. If so, and Spain continues to cling to failed prohibition policies, it will be a sad irony that other countries will legally implement Spain’s model before Spain makes their clubs officially legal.

Many lawmakers and regulators in Spain seem to be complacent because cannabis is decriminalized in Spain, cannabis is easy to acquire, and enforcement is limited in many parts of the country. After all, being a cannabis consumer in Spain is a good gig by many measures. However, wherever prohibition still exists, it can still harm people, so legalization is still needed in Spain, whether it is merely legalizing the very popular club model or adding to it.

Mace Media Group and The Physicians CBD Council enter into a strategic alliance to launch the Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine.

The Physicians CBD Council becomes the Medical Editorial Board of the new Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine that will be published and launched in 2022 by the Mace Media Group.

IRVINE, CALIF. (PR WEB) JANUARY 24, 2022

The Physicians CBD Council LLC today entered into an agreement with Mace Media Group to be the Medical Editorial Board and Peer Reviews of a new medical journal that will be published twice a year beginning in May 2022. The new Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine will cover exclusively research, studies and articles related to cannabis and its cannabinoid components.

Founded by Dr. Dung Trinh, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Irvine Clinical Research and Astiva Health, The Physicians Cannabinoid (CBD) Council was launched in 2020 and is composed of physicians, PhDs, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners who excel in their primary field of specialty while choosing to spend time educating their patients and supporting the emerging field of cannabis research for potential therapeutic health benefits.

“The mission of the Physicians CBD Council is to Promote, Educate and Collaborate for the advancement of cannabis medical research and to bring safety to consumers, so becoming the partner of Mace Media Group to manage the new Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine was right in line with our mission.” Says Helene Blanchette, President of the Physicians CBD Council.

Mace Media Group is no stranger to the cannabis industry. Celeste Miranda, the founder and CEO, and her team are the producers of the well-established CBD Expo Tour deployed across the United States.  They also already publish the respected CBD Health and Wellness magazine, both online and paper format.

“I am honored to have the Physicians CBD Council join us in our efforts to launch the Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine. As a Journal, this affiliation will set us apart from any other, providing incredible validation from physicians, researchers, and scientists. It’s a joint effort of forte’s to bring what will be an integral part of this industry to fruition. I’m excited to play our part, work with the Physicians CBD Council and produce a publication that will change and progress the course of wellness.” says Celeste Miranda, Founder and CEO of the Mace Media Group.

The more research and trials are being made on cannabis and the more evidence is unveiled on the benefits of CBD and other cannabinoid compounds (more than 100 compounds), on diseases and body disbalances. We now know that the endocannabinoid system, discovered in Israel in the 1990’s, is as important as the rest of our biological systems, such as the endocrinological system or the cardiovascular system, hence it is essential to join forces to bring to light the different studies and research being conducted. We strongly believe in the medicinal benefits of cannabis derived products, but also care to educate on the potential misuse or side effects.

Each Journal will contain seven to nine articles that will have been evaluated, assessed and reviewed by the Editorial Board members.  The Editorial Office, whose mandate is to do a triage of the articles, will evaluate the worthiness of the submissions prior to assigning the selected articles to the editors and reviewers.  In all, twelve MDs and PHDs will be part of the process, supported by knowledge experts and medical students.

“The quality and diversity of the colleague physicians and PHDs who are confirmed on the board is nothing short of remarkable, we could not hope for a better team, who brings a wealth of knowledge on cannabis.” says Dr. Dung Trinh, founder of the Physicians CBD Council.  The Editorial Board Members’ expertise span from general medical practitioners, autism specialists, psychiatrists to chemistry experts and doctors in pharmacology, all coming together with the same goal of advancing the medical research and education on Cannabis.

The following members form the Medical Cannabinoid Journal Editorial Board:

Is CBD Legal in Minnesota?

Depending on Whom You Ask, the Answer May Surprise You. To Put it Simply: It’s Complicated.

On May 30, 2019, Gov. Tim Walz signed a law that allowed cannabinoids derived from hemp, like CBD, to be sold for human and animal consumption. Near the end of 2021 though, the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy released a report stating the sale of any cannabinoids or tetrahydrocannabinols coming from any type of cannabis plants was illegal under Federal and Minnesota State law only with certain exceptions. So which one represents the legal status?

The Exceptions allowed

The only CBD sales recognized by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy as being legal are those of that have been approved by the FDA, and thus must be obtained by a licensed pharmacy. These products, they point out, are regulated and permitted by the Minnesota Department of Health, and are therefore the only products that meet the standards of the 2019 law signed by Gov. Walz. The problem is that, at the time of this writing, the only CBD product that has been approved by the FDA is called Epidiolex, which is used to treat seizures. Any other CBD products would fall outside that definition, and consequently would be considered illegal.

The Government’s Response

With the release of the Board of Pharmacy’s report, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture began cracking down on the sale of CBD across the state. Cease and desist letters were mailed to CBD vendors statewide starting in late 2021. Brick and mortar vendors were severely hampered, but online vendors continued to thrive. Even today, there are still plenty of options t to purchase CBD online that are eligible to be delivered to Minnesota. Many of these CBD companies operate outside the Minnesota DOA’s jurisdiction, and will continue to do so until the legality is clarified.

Going Forward: Which Way is the Wind Blowing

The 2022 Minnesota Legislative Session is set to begin on January 31st, and this will surely be an issue that they will discuss. Based on what they decide, the question whether CBD is or isn’t legal in Minnesota with be determined much more clearly and concretely. Until then, it’s complicated.
